MONDAY: Remembering, Cuban pianist, Rueben Gonzalez, of the Buena Vista Social Club, who returned to music in 1996, at the age of 77, to record his first album, and international acclaim.



TUESDAY: There is no generational disconnect in Cuban music. Dafnis Prieto, the young Cuban drummer who took new York by storm, has built on the tradition, of the music of the previous generation.


WEDNESDAY: An American singer , Tom Lellis, and a Brazilian guitarist /singer, Toninho Horta,, engage in a quiet but sensitive dialogue on classic standards.



THURSDAY: The decline in sales of reggae and dancehall internationally, has not prevented, the legendary drummer, Santa Davis, from making good music, nor, the elder statesman of reggae, Burning Spear, who continues to march with the times.

MONDAY: Revisting, “Coltrane”, the first studio recordings, of what became the classic John Coltrane Quartet. Ravi Coltrane, his son, replaces the late Michael Brecker, on a new recording by the saxophone Summit-“Sepharic Light”, dedicated in part to John Coltranes’s music.


TUESDAY: Clifford Brown and Max Roach’s music, albeit for a short period—Clifford Brown was killed tragically, in the prime of the group’s short years. Their music, remains as some of the best small group music, ever.

WEDNESDAY: Three of today’s top electric bassists, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, and Victor Wooten, come together for a record called THUNDER.

THURSDAY: Brazilian guitarist, and one time musical director of Sergio Mendez’s, Brazil 66, Oscar Castro-Neves, showcases his superb musicianship.

FRIDAY: “Holla Mulla Walla”, howls Professor Longhair of New Orleans, whose honky tonk piano, was part of the gumbo, of the city’s music. The Upsetters and Friends, including Lee Scratch Perry, and the Barrett brothers—Carlton and Family Man. All
stirred with a Twist of Marley.

Harold Butler Trio @Red Bones

Composer and keyboard player " par excellence" Harold Butler and and his TRIO will perform on Thursday July 24th, 2008 at 8:30 p.m. at Red Bones Blues Café with Maurice Gordon, Gregory Young and surprise guests.

Pianist, composer, arranger and producer, Harold Butler is one of Jamaica’s finest musical talents whom throughout his career has performed, composed, arranged and produced some of Jamaica’s most popular music. As pianist, Buther has recorded, worked and toured with a long list of musicians including Bunny Wailer and Jimmy Cliff to name a few.

" The Butler " has recorded, co-produced and produced with and for some of Jamaica’s best musicians and singers. Hits for singers include Pam and Woody (Book of Life), Beresford Hammond (One Step Ahead), Cynthia Schloss (Love me Forever) and Ernest Wilson (Let True Love Be). His solo albums which include and feature both vocal and instrumental tracks are : The Butler did it, My Life : part 1, Meditation Heights, African on my mind, and the soundtrack for the movie The children of Babylon.

Guitarist, composer and promoter Maurice Gordon will be playing his second instrument bass guitar for this performance. In the drum chair will be the very versatile Deleon White. Other friends will also be making appearances during the musical evening.

RIFFIN: A Day Late, but not too short

RIFFIN' THIS WEEK

TUESDAY: Singer, Perez, demonstrates what a leading critic says, is a special bravery to become a jazz singer. Cassandra Wilson, takes two blues to establish her difference.

WEDNESDAY: A duet by two young Brazilian musicians, Hamilton de Hollanda, a mandolinist, and pianist, Andre Mehmari. Gilberto Gil, Brazil’s Minister Of Culture, and a pop star, has a new album, “Banda Larga”(Broadband), that embraces the digital revolution.

THURSDAY: Hungarian pianist, Lazlo Gardony’s album, is called “Dig Deep”, because that is what he does, going deep for a groove of gospel, funk, and rock.


FRIDAY: Cuban pianist, Omar Sosa, returns with “Mulatos”, a meeting of cultures, a crossroads of races and traditions, a celebration of rhythms with notes and colours. Toumani Diabate’s “Mande Variations”, a virtuoso, solo Kora performance, by the world’s greatest kora player.
